A link is a handshake.
On plain text, stable addresses, and the quiet usefulness of interfaces that say exactly what they mean.
A link is a small promise: follow this address and you will find the thing described by these words. The promise is simple enough for both a person and a software agent to understand.
Prefer clear destinations
“Read the API documentation” communicates more than “Discover more.” It tells a reader what kind of resource comes next, before they spend time opening it.
The smallest interface can still be generous.
Stable addresses and semantic HTML reduce the work required to navigate. They also make a site less dependent on a particular screen size, input device, or JavaScript runtime.
Visual expression belongs around that contract, not in place of it. A beautiful link must remain a link.
